How to Get Stuff Done on Your Team with the "Wrong" Kolbe Score
Business owners often wish they had just ONE more person on the team to get certain tasks done, or fill a role.
Sometimes, that's just not practical.
Here's just ONE way you can maneuver...
Abacus CPAs, LLC
When I was hired on at Abacas CPAs, I was asked to take an online Kolbe assessment. I had never heard of the innovative theory, so I answered the questions as honestly as I could not knowing what the questions were rating or what my results would ultimately explain about the way that I think, react or problem solve. Once on the job, the Human Resources director went over my test results with me with in an in-depth explanation of my conative (natural tendency, impulse, or directed effort) strengths, my innate way of solving inquiries and making decisions, and what type of work environment suits me best. The Kolbe analysis is based on the idea that a person’s innate abilities and way of thinking do not alter from when they are children to grown adults…we are what we are and that our instincts drive individual and group behaviors.
I’ve worked at numerous and different types of environments and professions for many decades, but I’ve never worked for a firm that was intent in placing me in an environment that suits me best and that utilizes my strengths and talents to the highest degree. No employer ever asked me “What is your best time of day?”, or “Do you prefer email, text, phone call or fact-to-face interaction?” Abacus CPAs asked. Abacus has attempted to place me in a professional environment and type of workload that suits me best. Abacus knows that if I’m working at my full potential, I will bring more to the firm and our clients; therefore, they have assigned me work that I can do very well and become confident and passionate about. Abacus utilizes my Kolbe score almost on a weekly basis to bring out the best in me. There is even a small placard placed on my desk (we all have one) that shows my score in the four areas of Fact Finder, Follow Thru, Quick Start, and Implementer. By seeing my Kolbe scores, others can know in advance the best ways to communicate with me to get what they want or what project to ask me to assist with. Likewise, I can see my fellow worker’s numbers and know the most successful ways in interacting with them. The Kolbe scores explain a lot and it is impressive to me that Abacus CPAs utilizes this information.

What is one thing you will NOT do today? When I took my Kolbe score, it said I should plan my day by what I will not do. I've yet to wrap my brain around that. I mean I want to do everything. I see how that stymies me but I'm not sure of a way around it. So, tell me if you were to base your day today on one thing you will not do, what would it be?
My Kolbe score shows I am a fact finder. It says I good way to start my day is by deciding what I am NOT going to do. Yep, I've been trying to work backwards all this time.

I ADORE the Kolbe score. Kolbe Action Modes are behaviors driven by your instinct- not personality or IQ. Here's mine 6-4-8-2

And this is why I love doing everything online. Thank goodness for the geniuses who crafted/founded the internet, WiFi, and social media. I was born for virtual, my Kolbe score says so. "See solutions in your mind" "Have discussions without having to be face-to-face" "Visualize possibilities".
As your business grows… or as you realize that you can’t keep doing everything yourself, you’ll need to bring aboard great team members to help you reach your goals.
But how do you know when to hire, who to hire, and what role to put that “who” in?
I use the Kolbe A Index to help identify, much like a puzzle, the gap that needs filling, the best personality type for the job, and the needed skill set that will fit with other team member’s abilities and disciplines.
You need to know exactly what role needs to be filled and what Kolbe score that person needs to fit within.
The Kolbe Test brings to light the communication differences between team members. So, overall, you can work in a more cohesive environment.
if I was hiring a sales person who was leading a team of sales people… I’d want them to be decent on followthrough and some solid quickstart… but also be the type of person who researches a good bit when they make decisions. So prob something like a 4-7 on Fact Finder… 4-7 on Follow Through… 3-6 on QuickStart.
If it’s just someone who is hustling as a sole sales person… where they need little over sight and get shit done… great sales people can be found that are on any part of the Kolbe range pretty much… it’s more in their communication style vs. work style… but if I was hiring that role I’d want them to be decently organized and big on followup… but enough vision to have big goals and be able to sell your prospects on that vision. So make sure they have higher than a 3 on follow through (lower than that will be a night mare) and ideally below a 7 on QuickStart but higher than a 3 on QS.

My Kolbe score registers me as a high “Quick Start,” meaning that I have an appetite for initiating change and disruption. As an entrepreneur, it means I love taking a new idea and getting it off the ground.
I’d be willing to bet that a lot of you are Quick Starts too. As entrepreneurs, when we see that there’s a problem to solve and that we’re in a position to solve it, we are champing at the bit to get started. We start off so passionately, virtually obsessed with our new idea and getting it off the ground. The problem comes when we fail to think about the next steps.
The fix: Factor in scale from the very beginning. As you develop your product and think about launching it, always ask yourself, “then what?”

I’ve been day trading for the last 60 days or so. Using the same skill set I use for writing highly converting Facebook ads, I’ve made $14,500 so far! Ha! My Kolbe score says I’d be good at this, should’ve listened sooner! May bring some of this wisdom into my Inner Circle soon. Stretch yourself! Take a skill you’re really good at- instinctively and with experience and re-invent it to a new niche! So fun!
